Now more than ever, the international wine market is filled with a dizzying variety of wines. Even the most experienced wine drinkers can be easily confused by the sheer number of new wines, grape varietals, and wine regions emerging almost daily. Yet, with all this viniferous diversity, some claim that a homogenous, globalized style is emerging, and wine from all over the wine-making world is being vinfied to approximate this style.
This class will examine this claim through a review of some of the new-world and old-world wine regions and thei wines, and introduce some of the history and culture surrounding them. A major goal of the class will be, through exposure to a wide variety of wines, to help all members of the class to recognize the distinctive, traditional tastes of these regions and wines, and also to introduce the critical language that has been developed to describe wine and the winemaking process. Most important, the class will focus on the visual and olfactory keys to identifying and evaluating wine, on detection of flaws, style, and on how to identify grape varietals.
This class is free, but there will be a materials fee of $100
