Community Participation in Tourism Planning: Reflections from the Global South”
Sherma Roberts

Sherma Roberts is a Lecturer in tourism at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Having taught in the UK, she joined the Department of Management Studies in 2005, where she has worked to raise the profile of tourism education. Some of her accomplishments include broadening access to undergraduate tourism degrees for students in the Caribbean archipelago, developing a suite of postgraduate tourism programmes that are relevant to the region, and collaborating closely with the local and regional industry for internships and guest lectures. In addition to teaching, she has contributed to the public discourse on tourism, as Chair of the Tourism Advisory Council and as a speaker at various local and regional tourism forums. Dr. Roberts has been instrumental in developing the participation framework for the Tourism White Paper (2012-2021) in Barbados. She has three co-edited books—and recently published Contemporary Caribbean Tourism: Concepts and Cases—and has written extensively about community participation, corporate social responsibility, sustainable tourism, diaspora tourism, e-marketing, and tourism entrepreneurship.
