  • Please join us for the SECOND COLLOQUIUM ON INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING, which will take place at Rutgers-New Brunswick on THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2024. This year’s colloquium will bring together scholar-editors from Latin America, Europe, and the United States to discuss how and why independent publishing matters to contemporary literary studies, book history, and the sociology of culture.

At 1pm, Dante Gonzalez of the independent press Pakarina Ediciones will be in conversation with Rutgers professor Jorge Marcone about publishing initiatives in Native languages in Peru and elsewhere in Latin America. At 4:30pm, panelists John Thompson (Cambridge University, Polity Press), Ana Cecilia Calle (Universidad Javeriana, Himpar Editores), and Gustavo Guerrero (CY Cergy Paris Université, Éditions Gallimard) will participate in a plenary roundtable on independent publishing and the sociology of literature. Rutgers professor Marcy Schwartz will respond. Both events will take place in Academic Building West Room 6051. The plenary session will be followed by a 6:30 dinner on the 6th floor of Academic Building West. Please note that the 1pm conversation will be conducted in Spanish

At 12pm on Friday, April 19, the day after the colloquium, John Thompson will discuss his most recent monograph, Book Wars: The Digital Revolution in Publishing, with Rutgers professor Andrew Goldstone. More information about that event is forthcoming.

The Colloquium on Independent Publishing is sponsored by the Rutgers Initiative for the Book, the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis, the Rutgers Indigenous Studies Working Group, and the Rutgers Center for Latin American Studies. It is organized in part by the Grupo de Estudios sobre Edición Independiente (GESEI).
