Join Stephanie Galasso and Zachary Sng (Brown University) for a collaborative workshop based on Galasso’s recent monograph, Genre, Race, and the Production of Subjectivity in German Romanticism (Northwestern UP,2024). In her study of post-Enlightenment literature, Galasso argues that modern genre theory reproduces racial notions of being. This workshop will discuss the introductory chapter to Galasso’s book alongside Heinrich von Kleist’s “Die& Verlobung in St. Domingo,” asking how Kleist’s story presumes and unsettles such subjectivities.
