Since 2008, the Developing Room has brought together scholars at Rutgers and from elsewhere whose research and teaching engages with the histories, theories, and practices of photography. The group’s goal is to enhance the scholarship and pedagogy of its participants by charting the ways in which they create, interpret, collect, catalogue, exhibit, and publish photographic images. The Developing Room seeks to contribute to the unfolding debates on photography’s status historically and in contemporary culture by creating an open forum in which no single discipline or practice is assumed to have an exclusive purchase. The group also promotes Rutgers as an important center for coordinated and critical engagement with photography as an art, science, technology, social practice, communications medium, and cultural discourse.
